After his wife is killed in a suspicious hit-and-run accident, George Gently, a police detective in the London Criminal Investigation Division in 1964, applies for retirement. But an unexpected lead sends Gently to the northeast, where he encounters a brash but talented young sergeant named John Bacchus. To his own surprise, Gently finds that he still has important work to do on the police force.
